Choose the right contractor
Before you engage a contractor to do the work, make sure they are fully registered here in France. Look for the Siret Number. This is a 14 digit number which links the business/trade to the French authorities which monitor all registered businesses in France.
Is your contractor registered to do all the trades he says he does? The last two digits of the Siret number denote what type of business or trade/s the holder has been registered to undertake. For example, you might have a contractor who is registered to undertake Carpentry and Joinery work. This is fine, but you might also want a new Fosse Septique installed. Your man says he can do this as well. He might well be able to install your new Fosse system for you, but should anything go wrong with this system, you, the client have no come back on his installation work, because he wasn’t registered to do Fosse Installations!
Guarantee
It is also a legal requirement for the contractor to carry a statutory 10 year guarantee (Decennale) with all works carried out by them on your property. Once the works have been completed, the contractor will issue his guarantee. Should you sell your property within this guarantee period, it is transferee to the new owner of the property for the remaining duration of that guarantee.
